About John Varlas
BiographyCommercial Appeal preps reporter John Varlas was born in Memphis on Jan. 15, 1968 (and very nearly in a taxi). Since then, his life has been dominated by a love of all sports and a passion for telling good stories. A graduate of Kingsbury High and the University of Memphis, John is entering his fourth year as CA preps reporter. Greatest athletic moment? He once made eight straight 3-pointers in a pickup basketball game. He’s married to Jennifer, who soundly thrashed her husband in the 2013 NCAA Tournament pool.
