Written on People: Family to challenge Utah bigamy law:

Once again, religion is being used as an excuse for aberrant, sociopathic behavior. Courts have refused to allow a variety of illegal behaviors masquerading as religiously-motivated, and I hope they will do so here.

Jonathan Turley should be ashamed of himself.

Written on Dining Review: Build your own at Cheffie's:

Since when is $8.25 for a sandwich a "bargain?"

Written on Spotlight on Memphis for Orpheum's 2011-12 season:

What, don't tell me Halloran couldn't find a touring production of "Cats" or "Phantom" this year. He loves those retreads, doesn't he?

Written on Party Line: Holiday traditions:

It's good to see that Memphis is still carrying on its rich tradition of "separate but equal."

Written on A few tweaks for 'A Christmas Carol' at Theatre Memphis:

Hey Carter: who's playing that role?

The thing I'll never understand is why theater in Memphis seems to be made up of the same handful of actors all the time. Memphis is supposedly a theater town, but maybe they should add "homegrown" or worse, "inbred" to that designation.

Written on Concert Review: Jazz giant McCoy Tyner still at the top:

in response to YeahRightMemphis:

Great show, but three complaints:
1. too short
2. no encore
3. too much focus on the rest of the band, and not enough on Tyner, the guy we went to see/hear!

You forgot to say "too expensive," like everything GPAC does is. Maybe that's why there was such a poor showing.

$45 x 500 = $22,500

$30 x 800 = $24,000

Get a clue, GPAC.

Written on DO NOT POST! Best Bets: Ham sandwich:

And by "American cheese," I assume/hope you mean the real thing, and not what passes for it in our over-processed culture (i.e., cheese "food," the kind that's sprayed from a gun onto individual cellophane wrappers).

Written on New Memphis Symphony director to wave two batons:

Memphis has been very lucky to have the artistic directors of cultural arts organization's it has had, and Ms. Chen continues that fine tradition.

It's a feather in her cap (and the MSO's) for her to have been chosen to lead this other fine ensemble.

Written on Concert Review: Crowd doesn't mind Bieber's lackluster performance :

Is this how Elvis started? Somehow, I doubt it.

Maybe it's because I'm an old fogie (I don't think so), but I really can't understand what passes for music these days. There are no "pop" singers out now who are worth a warm bucket of spit compared to who we grew up with (Bennett, Sinatra, Cole, Fitzgerald), or even, more recently, folks like the Beatles or any of the Motown groups. Same goes for movie "stars."

Damn kids: get off my lawn!

Written on Dining Review: Trolley Market puts emphasis on fresh, local:

Sounds good. Is there off-street parking?

Don't you hate it when you get a to-go order home only to find something you paid for missing?

What's the best way to deal with this folks have found? Go right back, call them, fahgettaboudit, or what? Has anyone had a problem with a restaurant challenging their assertion something was missing from their order? Just because you're a customer doesn't mean you're going to be treated like you're always right.

Written on Party Line: Carnival Memphis:

Yipee! The white folks got together to celebrate their whiteness, as they do every year for "Carnival Memphis." And, just to prove it, they have their festivities at places like the Memphis Country Club and the Hunt and Polo Club.

Some things never change.

Written on News in the Arts: Lawler goes to the mat for return of wrestling show:

And wrestling qualifies for "the arts" how, exactly?

But, at least Lawler's honest when he makes the Graceland gift shop without an Elvis ashtray analogy. I would say it's more akin to a shoe without a stone in it.

Written on Party Line: 2-wheeling it to River Trail Bluffs reception:

Wow, publicity for Joe Royer. Who woulda thunk it?

Written on Best Bets: Ice cream soda:

Michael: you went to Wiles Smith and ordered a soda instead of a chocolate malt? That makes me wonder about your taste buds. There's a reason the malts at WS are what made it famous.

Written on People: Bullock divorcing James, adopting baby boy Louis:

What're the chances Louis Bardo Bullock will grow up to be an NFL lineman?

Written on Concert Review: MSO's Opus One offers opulent evening of casual fun:

You forgot to mention that, in comparison to conventional performances, the tickets were a bargain. Who needs a staff or, for that matter, a music director anyway?

I think the MSO may have just learned a valuable lesson about survival in troubled times.

Written on Dining Review: Alaskan crabs give king-size dining pleasure:

$60 a head for dinner? In these times? Was Caligula (or maybe Marie Antoinette) one of your party?

Surely, the fall of the Roman Empire can't be far behind.
