Oh 3 Angels, I want you to fix things and flourish. I'll come back for more, I promise. Feed us. Send me out the door full and happy.
The "short rib" issue is a complete curveball. Tasty but snackish in size. I completely agree with Jennifer Biggs' assessment of the pozole, which was a huge letdown during a visit last week. Flat, bland, watery and in desperate need of a skim. After fishing out the solids, I called it quits with a half bowl of shimmering, globule-capped broth. Salt and pepper didn't fix this one. My primary complaint with 3 Angels is portion sizes. I'll take quality over quantity any day of the week. Quality doesn't come cheap. And prices there are reasonable. But I can't imagine the starving artists on Broad ever leaving the diner with full stomachs or running back to pay for a repeat study in what felt like forced dieting. The grilled cheese would have barely overlapped a deck of cards. I almost laughed out loud when it hit the table. It was delicious but embarrassingly small and would have better served the needs of a four-year old, not a sextagenarian. I want to love this place. I really do. I want to go back. There are moments of brilliance. The lemon pie is a standout, however the slice was painfully acute, consistent with the seemingly Lilliputian portions that preceded it.
Also, is the star rating system gone once again? I'm seeing no stars next to Food, Service or Atmosphere, and having eaten there and read this review, I'm sure Sweet Grass is deserving of several in each category.
The reference to Lee? Lee who?
Many thanks to the Magallanes for their commitment to excellence at Las Tortugas! Their restaurant is a testament to the payoff that comes with doing things the right way and not cutting corners. Braised Neola Farms brisket tacos, spicy Gulf shrimp tortuga - worth every cent and a relative bargain in my book.
Bravo for bringing back the star system and a well written review!
John Scruggs Jr.
Great restaurant. Great owners! I was thrilled to see the headline and see Wang's getting some attention from the local daily.
But then . . . . . .
What in the world is this point/counterpoint restaurant review? Was this transcribed via two way radio?
Ridiculous. Bring back the star ratings. I know both Biggs and Burch are capable of cranking out quality criticism in traditional style. Koeppel and Leslie Kelly were captivating writers who earned the respect of the CA food section readership and the local restaurant industry. I'm losing more and more faith after reading today's "exercise" in alternative style.
What an embarrassment of an excuse for a restaurant review in terms of form. Do y'all read Bruni or Brett Anderson or any other major daily restaurant critics? I'm starting to wonder. Come on Commercial Appeal!
It's not like the paper is going to lose already nonexistent restaurant advertisers if its restaurant reviewers take a bold stance and start writing with some courage.
Disgruntled with the CA food section and the death of traditional print journalism,
